Thing #2: Pointers from Life Long Learners

The mission of the SBISD Libraries is "Helping Students become Independent, Information - literate, Lifelong Learners!" Because you are reading this and choosing to participate in this series of activities already says you are most likely a life-long learner, but it does not hurt to review some thoughts regarding what constitutes a life-long learner.

7 & 1/2 Habits reviews several key points of life-long learning and the variety of learning involved. You may recognize that the tutorial is loosely arranged on the format of the the widely-acclaimed 7 Habits of Highly Successful People.

Discovery Exercise:
1. Make sure you have headphones or speakers attached to your computer.
2. Open up the 7 & 1/2 Habits online tutorial and watch the online tutorial. The tutorial was developed by the training specialists at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
3. As you watch and listen, write down which habit among the 7 & 1/2 that is easiest for you and which is hardest.
4. Instead of the link included at the end of the tutorial, you will use your personal blog (which you will set up in Thing #3) to post your thoughts about lifelong learning as "Thing #2".

Have fun!

P.S. Please write a separate post for EACH Thing.

This is interesting. The contract feels like a huge commitment. I am going to think about it before I make the commitment.

I like the idea of taking responsibility for my own learning. I become much more invested by doing so.

I already am proactive about my own learning. I am going to work on that synergy thing. Number 7. Also, it is time to look at my goals and rearrange them now that my kids have grown and moved out.

YES! I am goal oriented and believe in the self fulfulling prophecy - when I commit that is the first step.VT

I have always enjoyed learning but kept it narrowed to classroom learning. It has only been in the past few months that I realize how much I have been learning outside a classroom. The 7.5 habits hit home since I have been attempting to learn the guitar; I must remember "words become your reality". So from here out I am an awesome guitar player!

This is the first time I have done this. I'm not sure how to set up the blog, and I think I'm supposed to comment on the 7 habits. For me, the first is the hardest. Outside influences are a demon I have a hard time resisting!

Yes, short comments are fine, but everyone participating in the program has to set up his/her own blog and post about his/her findings in HIS/HER blog, including samples where appropriate!

#3 is where you build your blog
Have fun!

I think I have this lifelong learner stuff down. Seems like stuff I've done before. Especially like rule 7 1/2 Play!

I love the interactive video. I hope to use these habits for my reluctant teachers to get them motivated.

I am definitely intimidated by all of this technology. Where is my 18 year old son when I need him? Whoops...maybe that's my problem...I've relied upon someone else to deal with any technology beyond my cell phone and the TV remote. Holy Crap! This is a hugh challenge for me...let's see what I can learn!

I'm excited about learning 23 techie things this summer. While I have been using computers for years, I haven't moved into the types of programs that are being presented here. The EASIEST Thing for me is #1:Accepting responsibility for my own learning. The HARDEST Thing is #6: Using technology to my advantage. If I know one way to do something technologically -- even if it's the long way -- I don't usually feel like I have the time to learn new ways. I think this program is a great way to spend part of my summer!

My contract is to complete "23
Things" during the summer of 09.
I was going to do this last summer. So I will begin with the end in mind. Playing comes easy; technology is hard. I need to use habit 7 1/2 and be a "lifelong learner" who really struggles with technology.

I have always considered myself a life-long learner ready to embrace anything that sparks my curiosity. I will pursue it with abandon, but this tech thing just scares and intimidates me especially without someone here to guide and help when I don't understand it. The other things that hinder me during the summer are all the distractions of family and projects I have anticipated getting done while I am not in school. Mrs. McC

This will be interesting as it requires a lot of self analysis to better your learning. I think the contract will be a great reminder of the steps I want to take to achieve a goal. It should lessen getting sidetracked on going off on a tangent (which I am prone to do) and keep me focused on the objective.

I have always been a lifelong learner. I learn something new every day! I love to read and take classes. I am going to enjoy learning new ideas on technology.

I really enjoyed listening to the 7 1/2 habits information. I would say that the easiest of these more me to practice is habit #7. However, I need to practice habit #3 (view problems as challenges). I think this would improve my outlook on many situations.

This is a new experience for me. My toolbox will be filled with tutorials, types of technology and friends. I view this training as a major challenge, so I hope to accomplish the task at hand.

I am completing this after starting it last summer. One son's college graduation and wedding distrated me last year.

This is an interesting challenge!
I am enjoying it as I play along and I can already see the endless classroom teaching opportunities. I am only sorry I did not start it earlier!

Thing #2: Life Long Learning
I am excited about beginning the 23Things training. I realize I have a lot to learn! I like to see where I'm headed, so it is easy for me to begin with an end in mind. It is more difficult for me to view problems as challenges.

I strive to be a life long learner and welcome new opportunities to learn. My hardest area though is seeing some problems as challenges instead of just another problem. The easiest is having a toolbox or resources and people.
